Umbertide - Vallata del Niccone

Usciti da Umbertide, verso Città di Castello per la Tiberina 3Bis, ecco apparire in alto sulla sinistra il castello di Montalto, con la sua alta torre, che anticamente fu una fortezza di grande importanza tattica per la difesa di Fratta e per tenere a freno le mire espansionistiche della vicina Città di Castello. La prima notizia storica del castello risale al 1385, anno in cui venne fortificato dai perugini. Inoltrandosi poi verso la vallata del Niccone, attraversata dall’omonimo torrente, zona di grande interesse paesaggistico, su un’alta collina sopra il centro abitato di Niccone, si può ammirare l’antico borgo medioevale di Montemigiano, con il suo castello, la sua antica chiesetta e le sue case restaurate in tempi recenti.Alla fine del territorio umbertidese, a confine con quello toscano, sorge il castello di Reschio, altro esempio di fortezza medioevale, della cui esistenza si ha notizia già nel 1355.

Leaving Umbertide and following Tiberina 3-bis road heading to Città di Castello, you might have a glance at the Castle of Montalto. Rising on top of a hill, with its high tower, it used to be a strategic watch-tower to defend Fratta and control the  territorial expansion of the nearby town of Città di Castello. The first historical record of the castle dates back to 1385 when it was fortified by people from Perugia.

Driving along into the Niccone Valley, the medieval village of Montemigiano rises on top of a high hill just above the village of Niccone. It is worth visiting because of its stunning castle, its old church and its recently restored houses. On the border between Umbria and Tuscany, the Castle of Reschio represents another example of medieval fortress, whose building dates back to 1355.
