* * *

Umbertide is a town that for many years has made a clear choice in environmental matters. It is no coincidence that the surrounding hills and countryside of the area have been protected and preserved in their natural appearance.
Nature lovers can then find the ideal terrain for long walks, cycling and horse riding along the paths through the hills and valleys of the territory.
And in between these pathways in green you can meet often castles, towers, abbeys and medieval villages perfectly integrated into the environment, architectural and cultural history of an ancient and fascinating.

A short walk from the city, in front of the large Park Ranieri, authentic green lung of the city, stands the majestic castle of Civitella Ranieri, a splendid example of medieval fortress. Its construction began in 1078 at the hands of Raniero, brother of Duke William of Monferrato, was completed by his son, Hubert, who built a "Citadel". From here, in a few minutes, you can reach the castle of Serra Partucci, located on a hill between the streams Reggia and Assino. The current structure, at the moment abandoned, was built on the ruins of the ancient castle, destroyed in 1420 by Giacomo Baglioni, lieutenant of the famous captain Braccio Fortebraccio. Not far away, on the side of the valley of San Benedetto, surrounded by greenery, stands the top of an ancient tower. This is the tower of the ancient fortified village of Certaldo, to the border with the territories of Gubbio and Montone. The first historical of this settlement date back to the early 1200. After long years of neglect, thanks to the efforts of the "Archaeological Umbria", were completed three excavation campaigns that have helped to bring to light part of 'ancient fortified settlement. During the last campaign was discovered a mill and burial urns. The goal of these excavations is to make, in the future, this archaeological site accessible to citizens and tourists.

Just out from Umberleigh, Perugia direction, crossing the railway and the Tiber meets the beautiful Abbey of San Salvatore Montecorona, located at the base of the hill a few meters from the river. According to tradition it was founded in St. Romuald, the eleventh century, the monastery of San Salvatore of Monte Acuto. The old basement crypt is of great artistic and cultural value. E 'consists of a large room divided into five naves, with columns of various styles that support the low times. The upper church, with three naves, consecrated in 1105, preserves the remains of frescoes and a wooden well made. Interesting octagonal tower and circular, perhaps in ancient tower defense, with the clock restored some years ago. Abbey you can go up to 705 meters of the Hermitage, along a road surrounded by forests of beech and chestnut trees and dotted with shrines. Was once connected to the Abbey by a trail called "the bricks", around two meters wide and built with dry blocks of sandstone, reopened at a walk ecological that allowed to discover the charm of unspoilt nature. The Hermitage is a former monastery, which dates back to the sixteenth century through the work of fathers and Camaldolesi Coronesi. Continuing along the same road you discover suddenly the ancient village of Santa Giuliana, a unique suggestion, completely restored respecting the original medieval structure. Continuing Perugia meets Fortress Valenzina, of which we have little information. At about 3 km, swerving toward Pierantonio, at the confluence of the stream Nese with the Tiber, you can see at the top of the castle Ascagnano, whose name seems to derive from Ascani, descendants of Aeneas.
Resuming finally the road to Perugia you can see, at the top right, the magnificent castle of Antognolla, place in Perugia area, but very close to that of the City of Umbertide, which stands out among the houses of an ancient village. It is not known the time of construction of the original castle, but it seems that in this place existed, since 1174, a Benedictine monastery.

Leaving Umberleigh, towards Città di Castello, after the bridge over the Tiber you can take the road that leads to Lake Trasimeno, through a campaign of rare beauty. On a hill overlooking the town stands the castle of Romeggio, building that dates back to medieval times, when these lands for passing the "Romei" pilgrims on their way to visit the holy places. A short distance you come to the castle Polgeto, under the imposing Monte Acuto, built in 1399 around a blockhouse already existing in the twelfth century that belonged to Biagio di Buto, exile from Perugia. And 'one of the best preserved castles, because it was always inhabited. Then on a few kilometers you get to Preggio, ancient village at 638 m. height surrounded by lush vegetation and forests that make it a holiday destination for those who love a pristine natural environment and the quiet of the hill.
The Rock of Preggio, for its dominant position, was considered among the most important of the territory Perugino and Upper Tiber Valley. Already existed in 917, when the Emperor Berengar I confirmed the lordship of Preggio Marquis Uguccione II of Bourbon. In addition to the remains of the fortress are to see the church of SS Trinity in San Francisco (1223), which houses a reliquary of gilded silver which houses a "Holy Thorn" exposed the Tuesday of Easter and the church of Our Lady of Grace (1400) that includes a delicious altar of Renaissance style and a fresco attribute to Pinturicchio. From Preggio you can go to the Lake Trasimeno you discover from Pinewood Col di Campana in a scene of striking beauty.

Released from Umberleigh, towards Città di Castello for Tiberina 3Bis, there appears in the top left corner of the castle Montalto, with its high tower, which once was a fortress of great tactical importance for the defense of Fratta and to curb the expansionist the nearby Città di Castello. The first historical castle date back to 1385, when it was fortified by Perugia.
Ahead towards the valley of Niccone, crossed by the river, the area of great scenic, high on a hill above the village of Niccone, you can admire the ancient medieval village of Montemigiano, with its castle, its ancient church and its houses restored in recent times.
At the end of the territory umbertidese, in the Tuscan border, lies the castle of Reschio, another example of a medieval fortress, whose existence was mentioned in 1355.

After the Niccone valley, taking the road towards Città di Castello, in the locality of Verna meets the Abbey of San Cassiano, ancient abbey that once was a monastery of the "Benedictine blacks", as it appears in a Papal bull of 1126. In 1139 San Cassiano passed to the congregation Camaldolese of Fonte Avellana. Continuing on this road you will come to a valley, that of Calzolaro, which borders with the territories of Città di Castello and Cortona. This area also very valuable from the environmental point of view in which they are located, on horseback with the area north of the valley of Niccone, some ancient architectural structures, unfortunately in a very precarious state. This is the Castle of the Rock of Rasina, whose earliest records date back to 1200, and the sanctuary of Maria Santissima Assunta in Rasina. The sanctuary was an imposing structure, recently the subject of a detailed study that suggests possible links with the famous Sienese architect Francesco di Giorgio Martini. It is thought that its construction dates back to the late 1400s.

In the entire municipality, were born some years, in addition to the agricultural activities, numerous houses and other structures that have given new life to old farmhouses offering, along with the hotel facilities, hospitality and accommodation of a high standard to the many Italian and foreign tourists that every year come to admire our beautiful environment and architecture
